March Ipsy Glam Bag Review

Screenshot 2016-03-22 at 11.42.50 AM

Spring has (sort of) sprung here in New Jersey and thankfully that spirit was reflected in this month’s ipsy glam bag! From the whimsical floral pattern to the lightweight products inside, this bag will definitely get you ready for warmer weather ahead!

Be a Bombshell Cosmetics: Baked Bronzer “Heat Wave”

This is probably the sheerest bronzer I’ve ever seen. Even with water it’s extremely light and dry. This is great for my oily, natural girls looking for subtle color that barely needs blending. For girls looking to contour, stick with something else like Too Faced: Chocolate Soleil.

Ofra Cosmetics: Eyeliner “Green Go”

I was hesitant about receiving a colored liner but this green is an olive with gold undertones. It will be super flattering on all my brown-eyed mavens as well as hazels. The consistency is not super creamy but also not overly dry. It should be a nice product for summer because it won’t melt away. Stay tuned for a day and night look perfect for festivals in the works with this product!

ModelCo: Lip Lacquer “Socialite”

This super long-wearing lipstick is super pigmented and the hugh I received is a nice orange-based red for olive complexions with a summer tan. My only criticism is the same I have for all of ModelCo’s products: they are gel based. I prefer cream-based products for my combination skin because it doesn’t stick to dry patches BUT gels are nice for summer as they give a more natural look that fades beautifully. This is a true stay-put lacquer and will be an asset for otherwise neutral summer night looks. (Think gold sandals and a white lace dress with metallic eyes.)

Evologie: Intensive Blemish Serum

I truly despise ipsy in the moment I unpacked this product because as much as I am generally a happy ipster, I have sensitive skin and can use very few products on my face so this one will sadly have to be re-gifted. No reviews here.

IT Cosmetics: Bye Bye Under Eye Concealer “Light”

So I have been DYING to try this stuff! My mom swears by IT Cosmetics for the anti-aging properties used in their products and though pricey, they certainly have a cult following. That being said, I had high hopes for this product and I wasn’t disappointed. It definitely covered any darkness under my eyes and anywhere else on my face for that matter.  But alas, this product is not for me. I wish it was designed for the pretty twenty-somethings shown on the infomercials but this product really is designed for an older demographic. The product felt like a thick plaster on my face and is clearly more useful for severe cases that have developed over time. This is beyond full-coverage and I would only use it for a special occasion with a full contour and falsies.

Overall, definitely a bag I can usher in spring with!

Review: Loreal Extraordinary Oil Haircare

Hi lovelies! I hope you had an amazing weekend. The weather here in the northeast is slowly starting to turn toward spring. I’m using the transition time to get myself warm weather ready! I’m sure a lot of you deal with the same beauty issues in winter as I do, mostly dryness. My nails get thin, skin gets dry and hair and scalp become lifeless and dull. That’s why I was so excited to receive my latest Influenster Voxbox with complimentary products to test and review! This box features the (drumroll please)…

New Loreal Extraordinary Oil Hair Care System!

IMG_6490

Different Influensters received different products based on their hair texture. For my medium thickness, moderately wavy hair, I received three full-sized products:

  • Nourishing Shampoo (12.6 oz) retail: $3.99 (Target)
  • Nourishing Conditioner (12.6 oz) retail: $3.99 (Target)
  • Lustrous Oil Serum (3.4 oz) retail: $5.99 (Target)

The system uses all natural oils and extracts like coconut, sunflower and rose to treat hair and add natural looking volume and shine.

I was excited to try the product but waited a couple days so I had dry, dirty hair to work with. My first impressions were good! I used the products in order. They all have a sweet, natural smell to them that seems authentic. If you’ve used argan oil before, the smell is in that family but better and less strong. Also, you know I love packaging. It would be nice if Loreal stepped out of the box of basic goldish packaging for an oil based shampoo. Still, the packaging is impressively sturdy- I’m certain the bottle will sit straight in a slippery shower and the clasp won’t break the lid off halfway through.

The shampoo lathered thoroughly and quickly with very little product. After rinsing, I set the conditioner for 1-3 minutes per the instructions. Once I washed it out, my hair felt a little tangly but overall, normal.

I dried my hair to damp using my Turbie Twist towel, then brushed and applied the serum. The serum can be used before and after shampooing and after styling as a final polish. It has a really nice texture. It doesn’t feel overly heavy or greasy.

I then heat protected and blew dry. I did feel like my hair dried faster than usual! By the time the hair was dry, there was noticeably less frizz than usual. (I have a lion mane of hair.) My texture seemed wavier than usual and more voluminous. No signs of dry scalp at all. It definitely felt softer to the touch.

FullSizeRender (4)

I curled my hair into loose waves using my 1-inch rounded barrel flat iron. The curls came out looser than usual and as I was ironing, I could tell that the hair definitely was softer. The products had the same effect as when I first get a fresh hair cut and style.

When I finished, I applied another small drop of the serum and that helped contain any small frizzies.

My style held well enough that I didn’t need to reapply heat the next day, just a gentle brush and a little more serum and I was out the door! My mom and coworkers complimented my hair so there was definitely a noticeable difference in look. I did still spot a few dead ends but nothing more than usual.

I generally wash my hair every third day and I was still able to do that. The oil in the formula did not make my hair greasy. However, I generally use a spritz of dry shampoo on my hair the third day to zap up any oil. When I used it, it had no effect whatsoever after using these products.

Overall, I’m really happy with the products and the price is inexpensive. The company also provided a coupon so we can buy again and unless something changes, I will! A lot of times I don’t feel like shampoos and conditioners really make a difference in hair texture but my hair felt noticeably softer, I had no dryness, the pleasant smell prevailed despite hot tools. This one is a winner in my book!

Check out that volume in the before and after pictures below!

Meal Prepping 101: Introduction and My Relationship with Food

With the new year comes resolutions and for three quarters of the country that involves living a healthier lifestyle. For me, eating healthfully is less resolution-driven and more about my ultimate goal to live a long, healthy life. It’s thought that at least 70% of your weight (whether healthy or not) can be contributed directly to food intake, not activity! Now that is not to say that activity isn’t important- it absolutely is essential to keep your muscles toned and flexible and keep your bones and heart strong as you age. But for those who struggle with weight specifically, hitting the gym may not be the BEST you could be doing. IMG_6187.JPG

You need to start putting an emphasis on food. You need to evaluate your relationship with food. I am very much in tune with my Italian foodie heritage and trust me when I say in my family food is used as the ultimate aid to any and all celebrations. If you earned straight A’s, you picked a restaurant. On your birthday, mom made your favorite stack of pancakes for breakfast. And let’s not even get into the fact that Italian American Christmas Eves involve SEVEN main dishes.

It’s great to have food help you celebrate life’s accomplishments but Italian families have this wonderful way of making everything into something. Christmas, we can eat like crazy. Ok, sure. But then there’s Christmas Eve, and the day after we can meet with our cousins on your mom’s side, and the three days after we’ll eat leftovers and BOOM, New Years and the whole thing starts over. End of January is my sister’s birthday. Huge party, huge spread of unhealthy food. With so many cousins, there’s a party in this fashion every month or so! With an immediate family of 30, that’s just how it goes.

At the end of the day, you have to make a commitment to yourself, to your health, to your body, to your future. Take whatever offense may come but eat before the party so you only have to try a taste of your aunt’s funky delicacies this time. (You’ll thank me later when you don’t have ageda.)

I am only as good as my planning and that is why I have made a commitment to healthfully preparing my meals in advance so I know what I’m putting into my body. Not only will this save me calories, but also help me eat more disease fighting, fresh foods like pure proteins and fruits, and also seriously cut back on my food bill.

Ready to take the plunge? Give me one week and see how your stomach and wallet feel. Head on over to Meal Prepping 101: Getting Started for this week’s food and a step-by-step guide and budget.

January ipsy Bag

As promised, a January ipsy bag opening and review! This bag just arrived in the mail today and most of my girlfriends haven’t even received theirs yet so hopefully I can give all of you ipsters awaiting your bags a sneak peek.

Screenshot 2016-01-14 at 11.17.48 AM

Let me first take a moment to appreciate this Warholesque bag. It really is a piece of art in itself and makes a real statement. This year’s cosmetic bags have really upped the ante with new textures, shapes, and historical and cultural influences. Score one for ipsy. Now on to the products…

Screenshot 2016-01-14 at 11.16.33 AMThis month’s bag is so on trend! I give it a 4/5 stars.

First up, Ofra Cosmetics with an eyebrow pencil! I have been loving my Elizabeth Mott Queen of Brow since I received that in a bag a few months back. Having naturally full brows, a gel formula is usually enough for me for everyday. But I had been thinking I’d like a pencil for going out to get those enviable sharp lines. And here it is! This shade is a universal brown. We will see how well that goes once blended. If you’re a fellow ash brown girl, feel free to comment below and I can give you a heads up if this will work for you once I try it out. (Ash browns have golden undertones instead of red like most brunettes so root covers, extensions and brow pencils often appear too red and thus unnatural on us.) EDIT: This pencil is a true brown and safe for all my fellow ashes!

Next, another product from theBalm! I was always obsessed with the packing of theBalm and the names and quirkiness of the brand as a preteen aimlessly admiring the shelves of Sephora. It seemed like as soon as I was old enough to afford (and pull off) all the brand’s fabulous mattes, it disappeared! Now it seems that ipsy and theBalm.com (haha thebalm dot com, that’s great) are the only reputable places to find the stuff! I am always so excited to get these products and this is no exception as I have been craving a deep chocolate pencil for easy, daytime looks. (FYI: This one has a plum tonality.)Sometimes black liner is just so severe. This self-sharpening pencil is very fine and should make application a breeze.

Beau Paris, mon cherie! This brush feels EXACTLY like my MAC Enchanted Eve brushes that I got for Christmas and it looks like them too! This smudge brush will be so soft against the eyelid that it will be perfect for day time looks and detail work when your Sephora brush is just pulling too much product. A nice addition to my collection.

Yum! This stuff smells delish. Not just peppermint but peppermint CREME for the win! But is it just me or does this brand, Lasting Smiles, sounds dentisty/teeth whiteny? I don’t know. Someone comment about this brand and give me the 411. I can never have too much lip balm especially this time of year. I keep a tube in every jacket pocket, handbag, work locker, you get the picture.

Finally, a palette. Palettes are a great value in ipsy bags because even a decent drugstore one costs close to $10 and the whole bag is $10 BUT this palette is called Falling Leaves…and rightfully so. Yes, neutrals can be used all year round. Yes, this is an eye-makeup focused bag. And yes, I am happy to have a small palette with taupe, brown and rose-tone because those are my everyday shades and the small package makes for easy carrying. HOWEVER, it’s rightfully a fall name for a fall palette. And I can’t help but feel a teensy bit failed on this particular item because  it seems like something they had chilling in the magical, mythical ipsy warehouse from October. Weird? I know I know.

So that’s this month’s roundup, kids! Have a great rest of your week and share share share those ipsy thoughts and reviews when you get your bags in the comments below.

December ipsy Bag

Hi guys! Happy (belated) Holidays! I have been busy working the holiday retail grind and have not been active here on PT so today I hope to update ipsy and Influenster for you guys. I have two new bags and a Voxbox to share deets on and this Vox, I was able to try yet-to-be-released products so I’m super excited to give you guys the inside scoop before these go BIG.

Ready? Let’s get started with my review of December’s ipsy bag!

Screenshot 2016-01-14 at 11.17.21 AM

The first product I received for December was the Julie G Longwear Nail Polish in Pin Up Girl. Love the name (vintage is so in when it comes to beauty packaging right now). However, the color leaves much to be desired. It reminds me of the shiny, cliche Christmas red I wore in the fifth grade before mattes were a thing. I can’t imagine any fashionable fifties femme would rock this. The formula is average, nothing much to talk about.

Item two: lip liner! Score! I LOVE lip liner and have been going through my nude ones literally weekly lately so I was so excited to receive a new one. Initially I was thrown and thought this product was neon pink like the cap but it’s nude! This is a product from ModelCo. I find their products to be about a 7 in quality- better than drugstore but the highlighting palette I received from them is not as pigmented as I’d like. Still, their packaging is definitely model worthy. The cases are hardy and they have deep wells so you get a lot of product in a small space.

Next up is an all-natural product with the most darling packaging! This nude natural lipstick is from Pacifica. Though it’s a little drying the color is FABULOUS. It really works as a perfect rosey nude on us olive-complected girls. This line is available at Target which makes it easy to get a refill when you undoubtedly use this one up.

Finally, a hair mask. Again, one of my favorite products to receive. Since my balayage, I take extra care to use a deep conditioner on my ends at least weekly to keep my color healthy. This Marc Anthony product is gentle enough to be used on color-treated hair and uses coconut and shea butter to make your hair feel and smell like you just walked off the beach. Definitely getting me into the summer mood.

I was so excited to see a new brand in this box in the form of Jersey Shore Cosmetics because A) It’s an exfoliating lip scrub and other than exfoliating my lips with a toothbrush, I’ve never really delved into lip exfoliation. During these winter months on the east coast, I could totally use this product. But B) The product is made right here in New Jersey in small batches. You know I’m all about supporting the cause of local businesses.

Let me tell you guys, this stuff smells ah-ma-zing. I use it in the shower and it does an awesome job without making my lips feel raw. It does a nice job on cuticles too!

*Pro tip: If you’re new to exfoliation, don’t break out it out for the first time on the night of a hot date. Exfoliation is an overnight/Sunday afternoon activity. If you use this product (or any comparable one) and then try to go straight into your lip routine you will fail miserably. Your skin (yes, even your lip skin) will shed and sloff off. That’s what exfoliation does! And you’ll end up with all little chunks in your lipstick. Not cute.

A special note for ipsters everywhere: Tons of people ask me, “B, how do you get such great bags? It seems like you always like almost every product. My bags stink!” My answer to this is review, review, review. I review every single bag and not just yay or nay. I give details. I take my time to use the product, watch YouTube videos on application, and then make my decision. I give good feedback and retake my style quiz with the seasons. ask and you shall receive, ladies.

Now head on over to the beauty section for the January ipsy bag review! It just arrived today! And if you haven’t already, join ipsy now! Use my referral code by clicking here and skip the wait list.

November Ipsy! Beauty Blast

Screenshot 2015-11-16 at 7.26.54 PM

This month’s Ipsy came and boy is this bag killller. It’s sending me to galaxies far, far away…

Screenshot 2015-11-16 at 7.22.06 PM

Tucker Ashley Perfecting Moisturizer

I’ve never heard of this brand but it smells really good and the white tube makes it feel somehow high-endy. Just me?

Smashbox Full Exposure Mascara

I have used this guy before. I like it a lot! It reminds me of a stiletto mascara: lacking a little in volume but great for long, spiky length. And the name is just cheeky enough.

ModelCo Highlighting Trio

Me? Model? You shouldn’t have! But seriously, the only thing better than gel formula is a cream and this blends better. I love having a gold, silver/white, and peachy glow all in one palette.

Absolute NY Nano Liner

Who doesn’t love a product with nano in the name that promises a thin precise eye line? I’m in! Comment for a tutorial.

Trestique Matte Lip Crayon

I’ve gotten Trestique products in Ipsy bags before and I like them. I would compare them to elf quality. The matte only makes it better.

Vacations under $500: Atlanta, GA

IMG_5254 (1)

Travelers and wanderlusters alike, if you have not seen Georgia, you need to. Now. Go book your flight, I’m serious.

I had the pleasure of spending the last week in Atlanta. What a beautiful city! Somewhere in my frequent treks up and back the east coast, I missed out on Georgia and its charm. (Next stop, Savannah.)

But seriously, to give my northeasters a scope. The city is the same size as Philly with a third of the population. No trash, few smokers, highly diverse.  I really enjoyed my time there. The city is very hilly. It reminded me of a baby San Fran. It was not uncommon to walk into a building off the street and be greeted by nothing but a lobby. The actual attractions were often up a flight of stairs.

The midtown area where I stayed is filled with little boutiquey tapas places and cocktail bars. Let’s take a moment to appreciate the awesome bar scene. There are bars and lounges on every corner and each hotel has at least two. These are not like schickler bars either. These are modern and fresh.

IMG_5297 (1)
Gladys Knight’s Chicken and Waffles

Speaking of hotels, I stayed at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis and though the hotel was beautiful, I would not stay there again. The hotel is driven toward business and conference shindigs and that was exactly why I stayed. (I was attending the National PR Students Society of America Conference that was happening right in the hotel.) The Marquis is truly dazzling and yes, it’s the one where “Mockingjay” was filmed. The elevators zoomed up and down to my 34th floor room so fast my ears popped.

One of the coolest attractions in the city (besides the gigantic, tourist-ridden ferris wheel that I didn’t do because I don’t do ferris wheels) is the World of Coca-Cola. The drink was created right in the ATL and the city is plastered with its love for it. Coke and Chick-fil-A. Any takers?

IMG_5335 (1)

The factory is a self-guided museum and costs less than $20. It has little theatres to watch old TV spots, some neat artifacts from around the world, and best of all- the tasting room! This giant space has soda dispensers from each continent where Coke products are sold. My favorites were the South African sodas/juices. Yes they were carbonated but they tasted like all kinds of fruity things mixed with candy and rainbows.

I am Italian so I had to try the one and only soda from Italy which happened to be the best selling soda in Europe, called Beverly. For anyone unaware, this is actually a pretty cute play-on words because “beve” is Italian for “drink”. I tried it knowing nothing of its lore as the most heinous drink made by Coke and possibly, the world round. And I tasted it…and I liked it. I wouldn’t drink it with my pizza but when a staff member told me it was meant as a palate cleanser, I totally understood. (Just as an addition, if you like the Beverly, don’t tell people. They will look at you like you’re crazy.)

Because I was a conference attendee I did not have time to visit the other attractions of Atlanta but I heard great things about the Georgia Aquarium (the largest in the US) and the Civil Rights Museum. All of these attractions are conveniently located in Pemberton Place, a small stone plaza.

Expert Tip Time!

Do: Buy an Atlanta CityPass. You can get a ride on the giant ferris wheel, plus receive admissions to World of Coke, the aquarium and the Civil Rights Museum for around $80. It’s $40 for the aquarium alone so this is a huge savings.

Do: Make this a long weekend trip. Even if you go to all the sites and try the local spots, three days will probably be plenty.

Do: Bring your bathing suit! It’s freezing up north but it’s 70 degrees in Georgia and all the hotels have indoor/outdoor pools.

Do: Visit the most fabulous mall EVER. The Lenox Square Mall has Gucci next to Fendi next to Prada next to Ferragamo next to Herrera. Need I say more?

The display cars are Masis. And I saw Fetty Wap in Louis Vuitton.

Take MARTA (public transit) and it will drop you off right outside.

IMG_5344Check out my Mistura Timepiece for the fabulous watch I bought while there! These are handmade and can only be found in two shops nationwide- Dallas and Atlanta. Each takes a whopping 85 hours to create and is made from genuine teak wood and leather.

IMG_5360 (1)

Average Cost

Hotel: $175 per night for 4 nights divided by 4 people per room at a high-end hotel

Food: $20 for a mid-range dinner

Drink: $10 for a mixed drink, $30 for a bottle of low-grade wine

Flight: $160

Next time…

Next visit to the ATL (and I will be back), I will stay in a cheaper hotel for 3 nights instead. I could probably do the trip for $400 that way.

Could all my Atlanters comment below with the best local spots we must try? Let me know if you plan to make this trip and need more tips, kids.

Happy travels,

Bi

October Ipsy: Alter Ego

Screenshot 2015-10-16 at 9.28.17 AM

I have been so busy with work and school that I didn’t get to open my Ipsy bag until last night! It arrived earlier this week and that metallic mailer was calling my name. As usual, I am so excited with the products chosen for me this month and cannot wait to share with you. Enjoy!

Screenshot 2015-10-16 at 9.28.46 AM

Let’s start with the bag itself. This month’s theme is alter ego, providing products that are within your category (mascara) but not necessarily your line (green mascara versus your normal black). In keeping with the theme, the cosmetic bag this month has two different sides. One is gold metallic and the other is black patent leather.

Screenshot 2015-10-16 at 9.33.12 AM

The first product I received is a hair mask from Eva NYC. It is supposed to be therapeutic and help hair become nourished and grow. In the fall and through winter, my hair, skin and nails tend to become dry so this is a perfect product for me for this time of year. Clearly, Ipsy has recognized that I love argan oil because this is another month incorporating it into my bag.

Screenshot 2015-10-16 at 9.30.58 AM

Just in time for the season, I was sent a pumpkin facial scrub! I like this one because it uses sugar for its exfoliant instead of those little plastic beads that are seriously hurting the environment. Plus, I’m big enough to admit that I’m basic. Pumpkin. Is. Everything. And can we take a moment to appreciate this gorgeous, elegant packaging?

Screenshot 2015-10-16 at 9.31.07 AM

I’m really excited for this third product because I’ve never used a product from the Balm before but people on YouTube and Pinterest are crazy for its face products (ie Mary Lou Manizer). So when I saw that this product was from the Balm and it’s a pinky-nude matte lipstick? I was set. I have been working the Kylie lip with nude, matte liner but it can make lips a little dry. This will be a great addition to my makeup collection.

Screenshot 2015-10-16 at 9.31.17 AM

This fourth product is one I’ve heard of for a while and always wanted to try but couldn’t validate the price to myself for a brand I’d never tried. This is the It Cosmetics 5-in-1 mascara. Again, this product is a cult fave and I am so excited to try it because mascara is one of my favorite makeup products, period.

Screenshot 2015-10-16 at 9.31.23 AM

The last product is unexpectedly a tool! Every Ipster knows that we don’t get tools (brushes, sponges, tweezers) often so when we do, it’s a big deal. These are the only products that you’ll never run out of and they tend to be some of the priciest. I received a new gigantic tweezer from Emite! It is their $35 full-size professional slanted tweezer and I’m kind of freaking out because the entire bag is only $10! I have a Tweezerman but it is the smaller one which can be hard to handle for stubborn hairs so this was such a nice surprise.

Screenshot 2015-10-16 at 9.31.31 AM

All told, accounting for the amount of product received, this bag is worth approximately $60 plus the cosmetic bag.

If you haven’t already, join Ipsy now!

Happy friday, gorgeous!

Why I Love Shopping Small but Amazon Still has my Heart: A Customer Service Story

Screenshot 2015-10-16 at 9.21.38 AM

Oh Amazon. The enemy of most a modern-day store. To be honest, I don’t think Amazon is any more to blame for the hit brick-and-mortars and mom-and-pops have taken than say Walmart. Amazon has carved its own niche in that it is exclusively found online.

The only times Amazon really competes product for product with local, small retailers is with its Amazon Fresh program and same-day shipping. Fresh competes with local franchisey supermarkets and if same-day shipping is available, that’s basically like delivery from your favorite store. I can see how in the select metro areas where these programs are offered, things are a little dicey.

Still, when Amazon comes into an area it creates tons of jobs. How great those jobs are is up for discussion.

Screenshot 2015-10-16 at 9.21.03 AM

Regardless, I am a former member of Amazon Prime (the cheap, student version) and loved every minute of ordering products at 9pm on Sunday and having them arrive by Tuesday afternoon for free. I think my mailman started to get irritated with me so I have since cut back.

Screenshot 2015-10-16 at 9.19.03 AM

One product I buy from Amazon every. single. time. I need one is iPhone chargers. Amazon sells a line of technology staples called “Amazon Basics”. They ship free, Prime or not, in hassle-free, low-waste packaging. The items are of the same quality and full-compatibility of an Apple original product because they are Apple certified. (No “this accessory may not be legit” messages for you.) The chargers come in the standard length as well as an extended length which I prefer because of the configuration of my nightstand. The longer one is around $12 and the standard retails under $10.

Recently, my sister borrowed my charger (which I have owned since July) and she broke it. I don’t know how. I did ask. I was met with denial. But the plastic piece where the head connects to the cord was pulled a bit and I figured the product wouldn’t last much longer. I immediately went online to order another one when I saw something about warranty information from the last time I’d purchased the product. Apparently, there is a one-year warranty included on all Amazon basic items. I emailed customer service and the representative emailed me back a few hours later, apologizing and providing a tracking number. A new charger had been sent my way already, with free next-day shipping. I did not need to show proof of the defect or return the old product.

*crickets*

I was speechless. And if you know me, that never happens. I was just truly, momentarily taken aback by that level of customer service. By the fact that this company had diligent enough records to know what I bought and where to send the new one. That they had an actual person email me and promptly. That they managed to make me feel like I just walked up to the customer service counter  and was given personal attention, all through a screen.

Amazon High, Amazon Forever,

BGB
